i’ve been skeptical of macramé for reasons that are mostly aesthetic snobbery and partially valid. the macramé revival produced a lot of objects that are performing craft rather than doing it—oversized, theatrical, the kind of thing that announces its own handmade-ness so loudly that you stop noticing the actual knotwork. i’m not interested in that. what i’m interested in is fiber on a wall, which is a different argument from “statement piece” and a more honest one.

these come as a set of two—28 inches long, 13 inches wide each—which is the detail that actually changes the conversation. one macramé on a large wall is a single punctuation mark in a lot of white space. two of them, hung with intention, is a clause. the knotwork is geometric without being grid-like, with a symmetrical pattern that gives the eye something to follow without demanding that it follow it. the cotton is natural and undyed—not cream, not white, but the specific warmth of fiber that hasn’t been processed into something it isn’t. the fringe at the base is the honest conclusion of the knotwork, not an affectation.

what a rental wall lacks is not pattern, not color—it’s texture. physical dimension. the specific quality of a surface that does something when light hits it. the knotwork creates shadow. the shadow creates information. a flat painted wall can’t do that. these can.
